Abstract

An experimental study was performed in order to elucidate the mechanism of the elevation of brain norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin contents following single cerebral electroconvulsive shock which had been observed in our previous study.
The concentrations of brain norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin were measured in the reserpine-treated rat, and again in the reserpine-pretreated rat after single electroconvulsive shock.
Brain norephinephrine and serotonin contents of the reserpine-pretreated rat following single electroconvulsive shock, were not significantly changed from the the reserpine-treated rat. However, brain dopamine level of the reserpine-pretreated rat following single electroconvulsive shock was significantly elevated in comparision with that of the reserpinetreated rat.
Those results suggest that the brain dopamine might be newly synthesized by single cerebral electoconvulsive shock, but the brain norepinephrine and serotonin might not be.
